Party Planning: Guide to Baby Shower Games

COLOURBOX7966307

As I was researching baby shower traditions, I realized that games are often a big part of the event. The surprise of the new baby lends itself to all sorts of activities that capitalize on the fact that we don’t know what this adorable little creature is going to look like or be like…or even exactly when he or she will arrive! Some people know exactly what to do when a roll of toilet paper is pulled out at a baby shower, but for those of us who are new to friends having children and the events that celebrate them, here’s a tip sheet on some of the games you may encounter.

I know I’ve put a lot on Harriet’s shoulders lately. Finishing up our last event, helping with our current event, and planning another one practically on her own. She’s doing an incredible job, while staying immaculately organized. Sometimes I have to marvel at how she handles everything we throw at her with such effortless grace! She even manages to pull together the perfect wardrobe for her day. Like this bright-coral blouse with its won’t-get-in-your-way mid length sleeves. It drapes in a flattering way but is loose and comfortable when you’re running around all day.  Fitted jeans and sandy brown, faux suede wedges are great for running around and a large, dark blue, gold bead studded, structured bag can carry everything you need without getting weighed down.  But the best part is the jewelry.  Her choice of a multi colored, beaded necklace made up of dozens of tiny loops and bursting with colors of aqua, ruby-red, olive, and burnt-orange goes with anything and it’s busy-ness emphasizes how much Harriet has on her plate!

Mixed Signals

I had a conversation with Harriet, our events coordinator and my close friend, that women everywhere have been having since the dawn of time. It was about perception. Harriet was worried that she isn’t always taken seriously because of her youthful look and demeanor, which doesn’t always communicate her strength or mature insight. In situations like this my advice is to never stop being who you are, and just make extra effort to emphasize all of your traits. That includes your wardrobe. For example, I think this outfit does a wonderful job! The dress, with it’s gorgeous pattern of blooming ivory daisies shows both her sweetness and her busy mind, while the high neckline and empire waist suggests innocence. But by pairing it with black, multi-strap, ankle boots she displays an attitude and defiance of convention. Finally, this sleek black and light taupe tote brings it all together in a way that speaks of her organized and practical work ethic. I’ve been nothing but impressed with Harriet’s growth this past year, and does a very good job of letting you know exactly who she is the minute she walks through the door!

Party Planning: Cooking for a Fourth of July Barbecue

COLOURBOX9330585

Happy Independence Day! Barbecues are one of the most common ways to celebrate the Fourth of July, as they offer endless options for families, groups of friends, offices, and communities to gather together to celebrate the U.S.A’s birthday. Backyards, public parks, on balconies and rooftops, and in a pinch – even a griddle over the stove will do the trick!  Plus, a barbecue can be one of the easiest events to host. There aren’t many rules, decorations are optional, and the only real requirement is the food.

The simplicity and celebration of summer brings back so many childhood memories for all of us here at Emma Approved. Here are some suggestions from our team for your Fourth of July celebration feast. Continue reading

Fortune Favors

She may not have been on the auction block or booked a date for this weekend but Harriet is really pulling out all the stops with today’s ensemble! Not only is this ultra feminine and delicate, pale pink, confection of a dress utterly beguiling with its sweetheart neckline and ruffled straps but wait until she turns around! I have no idea where Harriet suddenly got so much courage but the back of this dress consists of a single ribbon across and nothing else. That’s pretty daring for anyone! Perhaps her bravado was inspired by her tiger shaped, gold ring which curls around her finger and stares at you with fierce, bejeweled eyes. Last, a pair of sweet, low heeled, white loafers with tasseled fronts. And the best part is, Harriet didn’t get all dressed up for anyone but herself. That’s really something to admire.
