The biggest event we’ve ever handled is only days away and all my time is spent triple checking last minute details. So in my current state of mind I choose this fitted, knee length, patterned blue dress with tulip capped sleeves. The inverted pleats above and below the waist, and the tie in the back, create an intricate origami that flatters any figure in a perfectly planned way. And it’s intricate busy-ness looks the way my hectic schedule feels. I’ve also been thinking hard about presentation and representation. Logos, color palettes, and any product you associate with become part of your public image. So I found myself drawn to this beautiful blue, almost stately, print that reminds me of the patterns on traditional club ties. Then I bring out the dashes of orange, and the complicated pattern, with a structured, coral, snakeskin handbag and intricate white, retro heels. I keep reminding myself that If I just focus, and prioritize, then everything will get done in time.
The other day was my best friend Annie’s baby shower. And though I was really looking forward to it I admit I got a wee bit distracted with work. But I tried my best to make an effort, truly I did, even down to what I wore for the event. I thought back to my own childhood and all the things I use to love growing up. My first find was this neon peach, knee length, full skirt made up of cascading, pleated folds. Perfect for twirling as little girls do, and who didn’t love neon colors in elementary school? Next a white, short sleeved top with a wide cropped hemline and slightly open, tulip back. It’s patterned with clusters of sparkling sequins and silver beads, the effect almost magical, the way everything is magical when you’re young. Finally a grownup, summery, modern take on the classic Mary Jane’s with these white cutout heels. I adore the black piping and buckled straps across the front. Makes me want to try tap dancing, as I often did, across the kitchen floor. Overall, the perfect outfit for the perfect party. I only wish I had been able to enjoy the whole afternoon.
Regular readers may have noticed by now that I like when my clothes tell a story, capture my mood, or act as a metaphor for whatever is happening in my life. Fashion is at its best when it’s a form of self expression, after all. Today I was thinking about things that seem simple at first glance but are much more complicated once you look closer. We’ve been pretty busy around here lately, more than I expected, and so when getting ready I quickly choose this light blue dress with clean lines, a cinched waist, and a full knee length skirt. Simple, elegant, flattering, and comfortable. But looks can be deceiving and it actually has a lot of detail in the caged, cutout collar that continues all the way down the straps that reach across the back. Even the folds of the skirt are purposely layered, almost but not quite pleated, to create a similar striped effect. Once I noticed that I just had to choose heels to match, going with these delicate sandals with red backs and black and white striped straps. And to emphasis the shoes a red, patent leather clutch. Finally, just to drive the point home, this fantastic gold ring made up of small, intertwined gears. It reminds me that everything is connected, everything is in motion, and everything works together to get things done!
No woman is an island. No matter how hard you try to handle everything by yourself, you will inevitably be affected by other people. Other people who might threaten to ruin everything you’ve worked so hard for. In moments like this it helps to escape to a happy place in your mind. Perhaps a soothing, breathtaking, deserted beach where everything is wonderful and no one can come along to take it all away. My inspiration for today’s particular daydream was this gorgeous, abundant, full skirted dress. With a cascade of pleats and a pattern of orange, pink, and purple tropical flowers it’s like a vacation waiting to happen. And speaking of secrets, the sash-tie waist creates a customized fitted look, but blends in so the effect seems effortless. With a pair of chestnut cutout booties and a large, bright white structured bag. I’m more than ready to jump on a plane and escape this day. Not that I ever would. Of course not. Running away solves nothing. Still, it’s nice to dream!
After seeing a spectacular view from the top of a hillside the other day, I spent my night dreaming of how gorgeous such a sight must be beneath the stars. So when I awoke the first thing I reached for in my closet was this dream worthy, dark blue dress. It’s the same shade of blue as the light just before the sun completely sets, decorated in an abstract pattern of yellow that reminds me of a star-filled sky. For accessories I chose a pair of equally abstract white heels with double buckled sides and an elegant, snakeskin blue clutch with a fanciful tassel closure. The night is for dreaming, but the day is for turning your dreams into reality, even if it’s only what you wear. Hey, it’s a start!
Even with a million things to keep track of and a to-do list a mile long, I never forget to keep track of the details. Because details can make all the difference, even in fashion Starting with this fantastic, intricate blouse that combines a floral design and a delicate pattern of stripes tucked into a full, pink, pleated skirt. If that wasn’t busy enough I added a complicated pair of colorblocked heels that combines different textures as well as patterns with a crimson leather front, a suede blue back, and a black and white woven heel. I know it might seem a bit overwhelming, but with planning and forethought you can make it all work together!
Having a wonderful date can make a girl feel extra lovely. Spending time with someone who really appreciates you, cares about you, and takes the time to make thoughtful gestures like bringing you flowers can give you an extra glow the day after. Yesterday I spent just such an afternoon with the most important man in the my life, and today I woke up feeling like all was right with the world. So I chose this elegant shift dress in a soothing mint green with an overlay of floral designed, lady like, white lace. Then I accentuated it even more with this sunburst styled bib necklace made of matching mint green stones and miniature beads. A pair of nude heels with thick ankle cuffs will keep you secure if you’re floating on air. Finally, add a bright, sunny, yellow and white envelope clutch and your day could just not get any brighter. A successful event, happy clients and friends, and time spent with someone you love as you can only love your father. I feel ready to take on the world!
I think I must be a little bit psychic. I know everyone says that, but how else was I going to foresee a day full of crazy, mixed up emotions. Running the full gauntlet from overflowing confidence through disappointment, then panic, confusion and ending with heart stopping good news! All I knew was that I simply couldn’t decide what to wear and created an outfit that was a little bit of everything, which ended up perfectly suiting my day. First, I couldn’t choose a color or a pattern. So I chose them all, starting with this light, color blocked top in yellow and white with dark blue sleeves, tucked into a black and white, tribal print skirt. The loose blouse brought in by a cinched waist, which then flairs out into a belled shirt creates an hourglass figure that if flattering and fun to twirl around in. Then, if that didn’t prove how complex I am, I paired it with tall, tan, sandals made up of thick, crisscrossing straps. Last, I wondered to myself, what kind of bag should I carry? A tote, a briefcase, or a clutch? But when you don’t know what the day will bring we revert to the first lessons we’re taught. And a backpack, especially a sleek and sporty, bright white mini backpack, can handle everything that might come your way.
Today I was thinking about friendship. Being close to someone means you know them at least as well as they know themselves, and you can make a reasonable assumption over what, or who, they might like. It’s also like belonging to a little club, where only those on the inside know how things work. Our office is like that. A small, intimate group who has been through a lot together, some of us even before this company started. That inspired me to reach for my version of a members only bomber jacket. With buttery, summery white, vegan leather sleeves and a body that is a woven rainbow tapestry. This jacket is basically a statement piece, and when making a point you don’t want anything to distract from what you’re trying to say. So I keep the rest pretty basic. A crisp white blouse, dark skinny jeans, neutral pumps, and an oversize matching white tote. All that white may look innocent, but don’t let it fool you. We decide who’s in or out.
Sometimes you wake up in the morning with a bright and cheerful outlook because everything is running smoothly and going according to plan. The sun is brighter, the sky is bluer, and your hopes and dreams are finally coming into fruition. So what else could I wear but a colorful, optimistic, radiant floral dress blooming in shades of fuchsia, yellow and green. It’s slim cut, fitted skirt, and capped sleeves are elegant and flattering. Paired with coral, suede, slingback heels and a cream clutch covered in cutouts, nothing can distract me from my positive outlook. NOTHING.
